Future Fuels / Hydrogen

Hydrogen as a future fuel for heating and cooling has been core focus of BSH for a number of years.

We have undertaken extensive research into the use of hydrogen to produce zero emission heat/electric and chilling and ultimately helping reduce national greenhouse gas emissions for the UK and Ireland.

Enginner working on BSH Hydrogen academy lab

BSH is leading the way in Northern Ireland for hydrogen related projects.

We built the first two hydrogen related training rooms in the UK and Ireland for Gas Safe Engineers to upskill and learn the benefits of hydrogen blending. Our second training room also extended to pure hydrogen training for drone support and refuelling.

Our Hydrogen Technology Developments

  • The Penta

BSH has developed a hydrogen fuel cell system – The Penta – which can provide multiple energies simultaneously along with drinking water. The Penta range starts from 100Kw for small commercial buildings ranging up to national grid scale energy.

At present we are collaborating with national grid operators to bring a zero-emission power station to Northern Ireland and provide the designs and hybrid working systems to achieve this.

  • Compression Electrochemical Hydrogen Compression (EHC)

BSH is at a low technology readiness level (TRL) currently collaborating with Queens University. The success of this technology lies in its ability to compress hydrogen and purify in one step without moving parts and is set to revolutionise the hydrogen landscape. BSH has fabricated its first EHC for testing and prove study. A suitable safety test facility for pressure trials will be needed having demonstrated that compression works on low pressure tests in our factory.

Our ambition is to utilise the compressor to extract hydrogen at specific points in a blended gas line for bespoke purposes such as refuelling stations. Watch this space
