Yeovil College

Yevoil

2025

Yeovil college is home to the main training campus for several major employers; Royal Naval Air station Yeoviltown, Leonardo helicopters & Honeywell systems.

As the college had gain a multimillion refurbishment for a new campus they wanted to train in hydrogen and hydrogen related uses. Regrettably the insurance companies refused to permit any form of hydrogen to be piped through the new campus, deflated they heard about the Ballymena Hydrogen Training Academy where in 2021 we delivered a blended hydrogen training room to the gas mix approved by the UK government.

Implementation
On a planning visit the Yeovil team viewed our building, its technology and the training programs developed for the curriculum, all was exactly what they needed but lacked a pure hydrogen curriculum. Yeovil with its employers wanted to develop in pure hydrogen fuel cells and drones. They wanted the college to provide this facility as it was too bespoke for each employer to adopt alone. They approached us for concepts and we took them to see Intelligent Energy in Loughborough for their fuel cells systems and drones.

The Ballymena training room was reviewed, we felt it needed to be larger to allow a section where pure hydrogen fuelling could be undertaken, a white board for training and bench facilities for working / servicing.

Safety

Leak detection was provided, pipe integrity testing included and specialist venturi extract systems to make sure hydrogen would not pass electrical apparatus.

The curriculum was amended to adopt theoretical training in the new campus and then a short walk away, access to the training room on the campus but not inside the buildings. The room is totally self sufficient with training boilers, air heater, hybrid air source heat pump gas boiler and an absorption chiller for summer training.

The hydrogen training and infrastructure package has aligned perfectly with Yeovil College’s strategic ambition to lead regional skills development in sustainable technologies. It has enabled us to integrate real-world and future-focused hydrogen systems into a developing curriculum whilst also strengthening employer partnerships and enhancing the practical learning experience for our students.
